The first game of IPL 2024 took place right after the opening event. The Chennai Super Kings, who won last year, beat Royal Challengers Bengaluru by six wickets.
This season, ten teams are playing: Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Titans, Kolkata Knight Riders, Lucknow Super Giants, Mumbai Indians, Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Sunrisers Hyderabad.
In past seasons of the IPL, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI) have each won five championships. The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have won twice, as has the Hyderabad team—once as Sunrisers Hyderabad and once as Deccan Chargers. Both the Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Titans have claimed the title once.
This year, there are 70 matches in the league stage that will be played in a round-robin format until May 19 to determine the top four teams. These teams will then advance to the playoffs.
The first playoff match, known as ‘Qualifier 1’, will be held on May 21 between the top two teams. The next match, the ‘Eliminator’, will be on May 22, featuring the third and fourth-ranked teams. The winner of ‘Qualifier 1’ advances directly to the final, while the loser gets another chance by playing against the ‘Eliminator’ winner in ‘Qualifier 2’ on May 24. The final match will take place on May 26, where the winner of ‘Qualifier 2’ will compete against the winner of ‘Qualifier 1’.
